No more blizzard, to bad. Although, next week is professional development week, which is almost like vacation. There won't be any students there. It feels very, very cold. I think it has something to do with the dew point (which is -39.8ºC today), as our temperature is usually colder than the dew point. Here is Environment Canada's Definition of dew point:

It's still very cold out, I think this is the longest we've had this extreme cold in the three years we've been here. Last night, my toes got cold walking home from a friends house, even though I was wearing my giant boots. Today, we took some pictures outside, and if we had been out there any longer, I would have gotten freeze burn from my camera. I've also discovered that I need to start keeping my keys in an inside pocket, I have a burn on one of my fingers because my keys were too cold, and one on another finger, that I can only figure came from my wedding rings.
High: -36ºC, windchill -46ºC
Low: -39ºC, windchill -51ºC
Wind: W10 (avg)
Conditions: Clear and sunny

I didn't have to go anywhere today, so I haven't left the house yet. I will be heading out soon though, it should be a cold, long walk to a friend's house. Last night, I almost had frost burn from walking ten minutes to another friends house.

Today was very cold. I find that, on days like this, it gets difficult to breath when I leave my hood down. The air is so cold, that it feels like it isn't warmed up yet by the time it reaches your lungs. Today was the first day since November that we walked to school in the almost-daylight, and when we came home from school, it was dusky instead of dark. It felt fantastic to walk out in the sun, with so many blizzards lately, it's been very cloudy. When it is sunny here, it is twice as bright, since the snow reflects everything back. It looks very beautiful, sparkly and clean, and you can see for many kilometers.
I wore: giant Sorel boots (rated to -74ºC), snow pants, an army parka, a scarf, a double-layered hat, sealskin mittens, and my RayBans.
The weather in Arviat has been a little crazy lately, and judging by the news reports, so has the weather in the rest of the country. I've set a February Challenge (for myself and anyone else who would like to join me) to post the day's weather, and daylight hours
each evening, and how it affected me. I like using Environment Canada for my weather news.
To start off, here's a summary of the January weather:
Jan 1-5 : I was on vacation, so I didn't check too much.
Jan 6 : Blizzard prevented our flight from leaving Winnipeg
Jan 7 : Blizzard prevented our flight from leaving Winnipeg (missed work)
Jan 8 : Blizzard delayed our flight, but we finally arrived back in Arviat and had to work in the afternoon
Jan 9 - 13 : Really, really cold, but otherwise normal
Jan 14-15 : Extremely cold, I was sick, so I took the two days off of work (Monday and Tuesday)
Jan 16-20 : Blizzard, school closed Wed, Thurs, Fri, no water delivery the whole week, finally received water on Sunday evening. You can see an article about how it affected other communities here.
Jan 21 : cold, windy, almost blizzard, schools open
Jan 22 : cold, windy, blizzard, schools open in the morning, closed in the afternoon
Jan 23 : cold, windy, schools open
Jan 24 : cold, windy, schools open in the morning, students sent home at 1:45 pm due to worsening conditions
Jan 25 : cold, windy, schools open
Jan 26-27 : very cold, weekend
Jan 28-29 : very cold, almost extreme wind chill warning (wind chill below -55ºC)
Jan 30 : Wed, blizzard and extreme wind chill, schools closed
Jan 31 : today, blizzard, extreme wind chill, schools closed
So, this past month, I have worked a total of 9 days out of a possible 19. Eight of these days that I didn't have to work were due to inclement weather.
Would anyone else like to try the same experiment? If there's one thing I know, if you're not sure what to talk about, the weather is a good thing to fall back on!
